WASHINGTON – It’s official. Rene Gonzalez, a Cuban-American who served 13 years in a U.S. prison in a highly publicized espionage ring involving four others, has renounced his U.S. citizenship after returning to Cuba.
In 2001, a court convicted him and four other Cubans for conspiring to spy on the Cuban exile groups and U.S. military activities in Florida. Collectively the group has become known in the U.S. as the “Cuban Five.”
Host Rob Sachs spoke with Alejandro Sanchez, a research fellow at the Council on Hemispheric Affairs, to talk more about the Cuban Five.
